SharePoint External Storage API (KB937901) Documentation

A few months ago Microsoft released a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 hotfix (see KB937901 for more information) which added External Storage API (Obviously this hotfix was rolled up into SP1). When the hotfix dropped there was no documentation and many people were curious about how it works and how they could start using it.

Unfortunately, it does not add a setting that you can simply toggle to start storing your BLOB data outside of SharePoint and will require you to write your own custom code.

It appears that with the recent update of the SDK documentation that there is now some information about how to implement and use this new API.

The information is located in the WSS 3.0 SDK under the topic of Data Storage in Windows SharePoint Services.

Here is the URL directly to the SDK topic:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb897648.aspx

From reading over the documentation, the magic happens when you implement the ISPExternalBinaryProvider interface.

Be sure to read the Operational Limits and Trade-Off Analysis to understand the implications of this.

It is going to be interesting to see how people use this and how 3rd party vendors take advantage of this.
